Famous Fictional 7: On the Famous Fictional Payroll
“They are trying to sell you pizza, beer, breakfast cereal, and cheap electricity. They are your avatars and enemies when moving moving across tabletop worlds. They have an agenda, and often googly eyes. You root for them or against them. They are lovable, but live on the bottom line. They are mascots. Mad Art Gallery is proud to present the sixth installment of the annual Famous Fictional art show, which opens on the evening of Friday, November 1, 2013. Over 30 artists will once again be making pieces based in the realms of popular culture. This time the walls will be crawing with characters pulled from advertising, boardgames, and sports. On The FAMOUS FICTIONAL Payroll assembles a diverse group of St. Louis-based artists from the fields of illustration, comics, craft art, photography, printmaking, woodworking, graphic design and tattoo art. Artists include Matt Reedy, Amanda Mueller, Andrea Taylor, Vidhya Nagarajan , Jessica Robtoy, Jeff Robtoy, Erika Wardlaw, Darrick Hays, David Vordtriede, Katie O’Malley, Thomas Plunk, Sharlene Kindt, Ryan Doggendorf, Jon Baker, Scott Matthews, Chris Roettger, Bill Keaggy, Drew Crowley, Dan Madrigal, Katie Marshall, Brian Cummings, Ron Weaver, Anchovy and more!” The show is once again being curated by cartoonish, sweet-talking pitchman Dan Zettwoch.” (MORE)

Famous Fictional 6: People/Places/Things | “Bedrock is empty, all prehistoric humans extinct. Jack Torrance’s axe sits alone at an abandoned Overlook Hotel. The Borrowers have no Big People stomping above the floorboards. Nakatomi Plaza is absent of everyone—terrorists, hostages, limousine drivers—everyone. Scrooge McDuck’s piles of gold are placid, with no divers in sight. All fictional worlds have been deserted! Mad Art Gallery is proud to present the sixth installment of the annual Famous Fictional art show opening on Friday, November 2, 2012. Over 30 artists will once again be making pieces based in the realms of popular culture: movies, novels, television, comics, mythology, children’s literature, poetry and beyond. For the first time, portraits of people are strictly forbidden! Instead we’ll get up close and personal with famous fictional landscapes, vehicles, pets, still lifes, weapons, furniture, machinery, totems, ideas and anything else without a human pulse. Famous Fictional: Places & Things assembles a diverse group of St. Louis-based artists from the fields of illustration, comics, craft art, photography, printmaking, woodworking, graphic design and tattoo art. Famous Fictional is once again being curated and depopulated by Dan Zettwoch.” (MORE)

We’ve got a lot of names for the people that star in our everyday lives, from the special few who know us better than we know ourselves, to the co-workers who help us sludge through our weekly grind, to the strangers we only virtually know online. This show also poses the question of how well we really know those 500 plus friends we have on Facebook, while celebrating those we hold dear through a collaborative showcase of artistic expression.” (MORE)
