NOTE

I don’t really use the blog section so much. Most of my posts here are projects and they’re all listed on the home page, in order of most recent.

OTHER NEWNESS

I spoke at TEDxVienna 2022 on how to find attention, mindfulness, and creativity in the everyday.

Indomitable Spirit: A Farewell to Arms
Primitive multi-person armless seat—aka a “bench” (wood, steel, paint)
$200

Indomitable Spirit, formerly Flat Top Tony & the Purple Canoes, is a fictional band from Mr. Show with Bob and David (season 3, episode 4). They wore colorful shirts and sang a message of hope: just because someone’s a little different from you and me, that doesn’t make them freaks… it just means you have to try a little harder not to let them make you uncomfortable.

I made this for the 2017 Famous Fictional show at Mad Art. I know making a “Mr. Show” themed bench is kind of random and abstract, but it’s what popped into my head. Sorry I missed the opening; hope it was fun. Here are some process shots.

  1. First, the finished piece
  2. But here’s where it started
  3. Cardboard test shapes on live edge, rough cut walnut (?)
  4. Chisel chisel chisel (I’m an amateur hack with woodworking and need the practice)
  5. Laser cut shirt shapes for butterflies
  6. Dry fit butterflies
  7. Glue and clamp
  8. Plane and paint
  9. Distress the paint a little, seal with poly-whey
  10. Sit on it

What have I done…? It’s for sale at Mad Art in St. Louis.
