#41: Thit Nuong, NSM|2007
And that's that. The end of National Sandwich Month, 2007.
This delicious beauty -- the thit nuong -- is from Banh Mi So #1 Saigon Gourmet in South Grand. It was really good -- a great finale. But next time, when they ask me if I want "extra beef," I will say yes. It was good, but it really needed more beef.
Regardless, this is one of my new favorite sandwiches -- plus you can't help but love the name of the joint: Banh Mi So #1 Saigon Gourmet!

#40: Pork steak sandwich, NSM|2007
So, they only serve pork steaks on a plate at The Old Rock House. But I was like, "Could I have a pork steak as a sandwich?" And like a smart, customer-oriented place, she said, "Yes." Then I ate it. YUM! Best pork steak ever.

A mushroom Swiss burger and a plain ol' cheeseburger from Dairy Queen. I have decided to spare you from the sight of what they looked like unwrapped. Sorry, I just needed fast food today.

#24: Stilton burger, NSM|2007
Went to the Wrigleyville Goose Island before the Sunday evening Cards/Cubs game. I got fish and chips and Diane shared her good (if not slightly weird) Stilton burger. But we had bad weather. Went all the way to Chicago for a rain-out. :-(

#23: Ham and cheese on pretzel bread, NSM|2007
Arrived in Chicago after one night in STL after leaving PDX and had an appointment with the Field Museum to see some dinosaurs. Had to fuel up first and went into the Corner Bakery for a sandwich on pretzel bread. I guess the Corner Bakery is Chicago's Bread Co./Panera. We're supposed to be here to see the Cards beat the Cubs but it's raining. :-(

#18: Chicken sandwich, NSM|2007
I know, I know. LAME! But here's my excuse: I woke up at 4 a.m. to catch a flight to Portland. Nothing was open in the St. Louis airport. Gotta switch planes in Denver but my plane is already boarding when I touch down so I can't even grab something fast (long lines everywhere). So I fly to PDX hungry and by the time I get there I am so desperate for food I get the fastest, nastiest sandwich available in the airport. The edges of this thing were almost like jerky. So there.
I think I'll start tomorrow with a good breakfast sandwich from a nice PDX breakfast joint.

#11: Roast beef Waldorf salad sandwich, NSM|2007
Roast beef, horseradish, apples, onion, celery and more. Diane called it a "Roast beef Waldorf Salad" sandwich, so I'll trust her on that. Slap in on dark rye and you got yourself a solid dinner! Mmmmmm good.

#9: The St. Paul, NSM|2007
The wonderful St. Paul sandwich. Featured in "Sandwiches You Will Like" and suggested to me by sandwich connoisseurs Oldtasty and Thomas Crone. I LOVE IT! The only sandwich I've encountered that can triumph over stale bread!
This time I got it at Kim Van, just south of downtown St. Louis, and I was unlucky enough to witness someone who did not seem to be so obviously healthy in the first place going into shock or something. Her friend slapped her face as she gurgled, then she woke up and asked why he was hitting her and asked me for change. I had already asked the owners to call 911 by the time she came to. Weird.
I decided to get my order "to go."

#8: Roast beef & Colby, NSM|2007
The first clunker. Since I'm not a sandwich snob, just a sandwich lover, I give all sandwiches a chance. This one is from the deli at Dierbergs, a local grocery chain.
Dierbergs makes good prepared foods and great desserts, but this sandwich was more like a convenience store special. Not enough beef, too much cheese, dry bread, no condiments in the package. I couldn't even finish it. Good thing I bought a big hunk o' tirramissou Tiramisu for dessert!

#4: Cheeseburger, NSM|2007
Broke in the new grill today. My parents and aunt and uncle are in town and we're doing some long-neglected home repairs. It's, like, probably 178 degree F in St. Louis so the work seems harder than it is.
But I have a new grill and my folks brought burgers so we fired it up (btw, "Fire It Up" from the new Modest Mouse CD is one of Sorena's favorite songs. It is both charming and frightening to hear a two-year-old sing chorus: "Fire it up, fire it up...").
Anyway, were these burgers an amazing wonder of sandwichcraft? No, but they filled us up good and the grill worked great. It's so shiny!

#3: Grilled cheese, NSM|2007
Grilled cheese at the classic Billie's Fine Foods, down at 1802 South Broadway, St. Louis. This is a real diner, where the ladies call you "sweetie," and the men do hard labor.
Every bite of the she sandwich was delicious. right down to the griddle boogers* embedded in the Texas toast.
*Well, what else do you call those ultra-fried specks of various previous meals that you can see on the bread? Yum. Griddle boogers.

#1: Meatball, NSM|2007
Mmmmmm. IT'S NATIONAL SANDWICH MONTH AGAIN! I started off with a meatball sub from the Blues City Deli, St. Louis. Delicious. My favorite in town, and it really filled me up.
"The ‘Marina’ Meatball Po-Boy: Lots of Spicy Home-made Meatballs in Delicious Marinara Sauce and Topped with Provel and Parmesan Cheese."
I'm no fan of Provel, but this sandwich made it taste good! Plus, the owner treated us right -- and he knew about my site!
